Private hospitals will have to display treatment costs

                                     In a major move aimed at checking unnecessary medical tests and procedures, the health ministry on Sunday said it was working on a plan to make it mandatory for all private hospitals to declare and display the treatment costs of different diseases.
                                   Jagdish Prasad, director general of health services (DGHS), told TOI that the ministry's plan would check overbilling and bring in transparency in the healthcare sector.Aim is to notify standard costs for various medical procedures such as angioplasty, coronary bypass surgery etc. We also plan to categorize hospitals based on quality of services offered and develop standard treatment costs for each category.
Unwarranted procedures add to cost
                                     Prasad said the guidelines will be introduced under the Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act 2010, which was notified recently.
                                    The planned guidelines would also give a boost to evidence-based approach to treatment, said Dr Kameshwar Prasad, head of the clinical epidemiology unit of AIIMS. "Unwarranted procedures and diagnostic tests put extra financial burden on the healthcare system and cause increased morbidity and mortality. For example, a person suffering from muscular chest pain does not require angiography. Still, many hospitals routinely put such patients through this procedure," the doctor said.
                                      Experts cite studies showing rampant use of unnecessary procedures in India. For instance,hormone replacement therapy is carried out in post-menopausal women despite there being no evidence that it reduces cardiac events. Similarly, antioxidant vitamins are commonly prescribed for reducing cardiovascular disease though there's no evidence of its efficacy. TheElisa test has till recently been widely used for diagnosis of tuberculosis. It has since been banned due to its unreliability.
The DGHS also said patient treatment cannot be taken as a clinical trial. "Stem cell therapy is being offered for spine injuries by many hospitals and patients are charged for that. This despite the fact that there's no proven effect of the therapy. This can only be stopped through patient awareness and strict monitoring by government agencies," Prasad said.
                                         AIIMS is leading a first-of-its kind global initiative to promote evidence-based healthcare. Said institute director, Dr R C Deka, "Awareness of the latest evidence-based treatments is necessary. However, treatment costs should also be borne in mind by doctors while suggesting procedures for patients."Deka also said overprescription was also leading to immunity against many antibiotics, a problem that was likely to become serious in the future. Standardized procedures should help in curbing this trend, he added

KFC -Killer Fried Chicken

Are you KFC lovers?????
7 Unbelievable Facts about KFC being Unhealthy...

* The Chicken:
KFC uses factory farming to produce their chicken. This means maximization of profits by neglecting health conditions at farms. The chickens are provided with no room to move and are deprived of sun. They are fed the cheapest quality of grain (including newspaper and cardboard), a lot of antibiotics and hormo
nes to accelerate their growth. They are thus deformed and ill. Also, all of the chemicals, newspaper, cardboard and medicines are injected into the food chain and make their way into your body!

* Maltodextrin:
This version of sugar added to KFC recipes suppresses the immune function of the body and leads to diabetes. This can also potentially cause addiction to KFC products.

* KFC Salt:
KFC uses highly refined table salt. This means that it is devoid of essentials minerals and has a ton of additives that potentially lead to heavy metal toxicity, Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure and kidney problems.

* Partially Hydrogenated Oil:
This is where you should really start getting worried. The oils used at KFC are literally saturated with omega-6 fatty acids. Though useful, but consumption in such large quantities causes heart problems and impaired brain function.

* Monosodium Glutamate:
The infamous MSG is no stranger to many folks. Many food manufacturers including KFC use MSG (Also known as Adinomoto in Mauritius) as a flavor magnifier. Seems great. The only problem being that in addition to flavor enhancing, it also kills brain cells and dumbs you down. It acts quickly and is not good for you. Other ingredients such as the Autolyzed yeast also contain MSG.

* Chicken Fat and Beef Fat:
If coming from a healthy farm raised animal, these fats can do a lot of good to the body. However, there is a small problem. The animal bodies are designed to protect themselves from toxicity by trapping the toxins in the fat reserves. Thus, in a factory-raised animal, as in case of KFC, these fats can prove to be pretty toxic on consumption.

* Bleached Wheat Flour:
Since the bleached wheat flour is an extremely refined source of carbohydrates, its consumption can cause rapid insulin spikes in the blood sugar level and cause problems with insulin control. This is a certain path to diabetes and gaining a good amount of fat on you.

Coal Politics

Coal is fuel for rest of world , but in India its politics.
Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh held responsible for allocatingcoal blocks,CAG held PM office responsible for this.BJP interepted parliament demanding PM’s resignation.
Demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation on grounds of moral responsibility and constitutional accountability, BJP defended its strategy of obstructing Parliament.
 “I have absolutely no hesitation that if there has been a malafide allocation of coal where the State Government may have made a recommendation, please go ahead and make an inquiry,” BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told Karan Thapar in Devil’s Advocate programme on CNN-IBN.
He said that it is the duty of the State Governments to make recommendations on allocation of coal blocks, but it was the responsibility of the Congress-led government at the Centre that had to take a final decision on the coal block bidding issue, which it held back for eight years.
“It was the responsibility of the Government of India, which had asked for the comments of the State Governments, to take their comments into consideration. Take their concerns on board and take a decision,” he said.
Yashwant Sinha reiterated that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was the Coal Minister at the time such coal block allocations were made, should take the moral responsibility and resign.

AAMIR KHAN TO APOLAGISE ?

Should Aamir Khan to apologize for accusing doctors of malpractices in his TV talk show
 "Satyamev Jayate".

Medscape India said the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was "rather sad" and Aamir Khan should offer his apologies.

"It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny," Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said.

After highlighting social issues affecting Indian society, Aamir Khan, in the fourth episode of his show, turned the spotlight on healthcare and malpractices in the medical profession.

He highlighted unethical practices, corruption and scandalous revelations in medical treatment.
"Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films," said another doctor, Sunita Dube, president of Medscape.

"Surprisingly, no doctors' body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him," Dube said.

Medscape pointed out that doctors were subjected to assault without any fault and many people didn't understand the pressures of the profession.

"Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?" asked Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape.

PAN MASALA BANNED

PAN MASALA BANNED IN KERALA

                                                                             Kerala had become the second State in the country after Madhya Pradesh to ban gutkha products .Kerala government has imposed a ban on manufacture, storage and sale of gutkha, panmasala and their variants containing tobacco and nicotine in the State.The ban was ordered under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulation, 2011, treating gutkha, panmasala and their variants as food products, with immediate effect.The ban was decided upon as the products caused diseases such as cancer and addiction among youth. The ban was a long standing demand from parents and many others. The government would lose Rs 15 crore in tax revenue because of the ban. The tax had been raised from 20 to 22 per cent in current year’s Budget.The Chief Minister recalled that the government had banned sale of pan masala and gutkha products within 400 metres from educational institutions. Efforts to ban it across the State under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act had not been successful.Collectors would head squads to check sale or distribution of the tobacco products.
                                                                                Tobacco Free Kerala, a coalition of like-minded organisations in the area of anti-tobacco campaigns, was launched in December last with the Minister as chairman to support the government activities for checking use of tobacco. Paul Sebastian, Director, Regional Cancer Centre here, is its Vice Chairman. Widespread use of pan masala and Gutkha products had come to the notice of the government, especially among the youth.
                                                            Gutkha is a powdery, granular white smokeless product that contains arecanut, tobacco, nicotine, lime, spices, cardamom, catechu, colouring agents and pleasing flavouring odours. According to Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2009-10, 10.7 per cent of adults in Kerala use smokeless tobacco products such as gutkha and pan masala.Studies have shown that gutkha is more addictive than ordinary chewing tobacco. It is highly carcinogenic as it contains both tobacco and arecanut. Gutkha use is strongly associated with the development of oral submucosal fibrosis, which causes difficulty in opening the mouth. Nearly two-third of patients with this condition develops cancer, an official release said.

GOVERNMENT SAYS

Global crude oil prices have surged since the beginning of 2012 on account of geo-political concerns in the Middle East and abundant global liquidity. The price of Brent crude rose to USD 120 a barrel in mid-April from USD 111 in January.

For the current fiscal, the government has made a provision of Rs 43,580 crore for oil subsidies, of which Rs 40,000 crore has been earmarked as compensation to oil marketing companies (OMCs) for selling petroleum products at lower than market rates.

REAL FACTS BEHIND PRICE RISE

During the 2011-The government targets to bring down the subsidy bill to below 2 percent of GDP this fiscal and 1.75 percent in the subsequent years. 12 fiscal, the government has paid Rs 65,000 crore to OMCs on account of under-recoveries, of which Rs 20,000 crore alone was for the January-March quarter.

High subsidies are putting pressure on the country's fiscal deficit, which touched 5.9 percent of GDP last fiscal and is pegged at 5.1 per cent in 2012-13. India imports about 80 per cent of its crude oil requirement.

MULLAPERIYAR LATEST REPORT

The report filed by the five-member panel of jurists headed by Justice A S Anand, appointed by the Supreme Court on the Mullaperiyar issue, which is obviously against the interests of Kerala, has evoked mixed response.
Water Resources Minister P J Joseph said that the report on the Mullaperiyar dam was against the interests of Kerala and it could not be approved.
“How can a dam which is 116 years old be termed as safe,’’ he said and asserted that Kerala did not consider the report as a last word.
Joseph also criticised the stand of Justice K T Thomas, the representative of Kerala in the SC-appointed panel.
“It is sad that he has taken such a stance while framing the report,’’ he said.
Kerala will continue its fight for a new dam in Mullaperiyar, Joseph said.
Justice Thomas, on the other hand, asked how can one say that the report was against the state’s interests. He also said one cannot disagree with the findings of the panel, since facts have to be taken into account.
“A 12-member expert technical committee had conducted umpteen tests on the dam to evaluate its actual strength. Is it not a respite for the people of Kerala to know that a fool-proof expert committee has certified that dam as safe under various parameters. By describing a safe dam as unsafe and thereby creating a scare and fueling animosity between the people of two states may be useful if one is playing to the mass media,’’ he told ‘Express.’ “At the same time, I’ve made a strong dissenting note in the report against the majority recommendation to raise the water level in the dam from the current 136 ft to 142 feet. I’ve pointed out that the Idukki dam was constructed after Independence and as such, Kerala should get sufficient water from upstream areas, where Mullaperiyar is situated. Within the 136 ft level, Tamil Nadu was meeting its water needs for electricity and power generation in the past many years and, therefore, there is no need to raise the water level. My stand has nothing to do with dam safety,’’ Justice Thomas said.
“Last if not the least, the report clearly states that the scope of a new dam should be looked into,’’ he added.
Kerala should proceed to build a new dam and also find ways legally to get a market value for Mullaperiyar water used for power generation from Tamil Nadu, he said.
However, former Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran termed the SC empowered committee’s report as disappointing and unilateral.

Baby Falak on road to recovery at AIIMS

The two year old ,Falak, baby girl lying broken and battered on bed 13 of AIIMS’ neurosurgery ICU is “weak and not responding well to treatment”, doctors said on Thursday.

Nine days after she was brought to the trauma centre with multiple injuries, her frail body is hooked to tubes and monitors. The coming week is critical for her. “If she does not improve in the next seven days, chances of her survival will decrease,” said trauma centre chief Dr MC Misra.

A ventilator is keeping her alive. But this comes with its own risks. “Our main concern is getting her off the ventilator when her breathing stabilises. We will get to know how her brain is functioning only after she is off the ventilator,” Dr Misra said. “The longer one stays on life support, the greater the chances of acquiring complications such as pneumonia.”
The girl underwent brain surgery on the day she was brought in — by a teenager claiming to be her mother — on January 18. Since then she’s suffered two cardiac arrests. Even if she survives, the doctors fear the damage to her brain may be permanent.
Her injuries were fresh when she came in. “The bite marks and fractures did not seem more than a day old. The cheeks were badly swollen, indicating they’d been recently branded with a hot iron,” said one doctor.
The girl’s identity remains a mystery. The teen, the only link to her, has been counselled and is in a juvenile home.
