SAVE MULLAPERIYAR DAM

MULLAPERIYAR DAM

JOIN HANDS FOR NEW DAM ,SAVE 35 LAKH PEOPLE IN KERALA
  OVERVEIW OF  MULAPERIYAR DAM
Mullaperiyar dam is 116 years old as of 2011. It has outlived its expected life span of 50 years.Strengthening the existing dam has its limitations and may not prove to be effective in the event of a disaster (reference: Morvi Dam)
  1. Construction Material: The dam was constructed using lime & surki mixture (consisiting of sugar &calcium oxide). Seepage and leaks from the dam have caused concern
  2. Earthquakes: The dam is situated in a seismically active zone . CESS has reported that the dam cannot withstand earthquakes above 6 point on the Richter scale. An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred on June 7, 1988 with maximum damage in Nedumkandam and Kallar (within 20 kms of the dam). Several earthquake tremors have occurred in the area in recent times. These could be reservoir-induced seismicity, requiring further studies according to experts.
  3. Changing weather patterns leading to incessant rains, flooding and overflow of the dam.
  4. Inadequate safety maintenance and safety monitoring of the dam

The Idukki Hydroelectric project, located 30 km downstream was completed in 1976 by the Kerala government After Independence the areas downstream of the Mullaperiyar become heavily inhabited, as Kerala has a very high population. If Mullaperiyar dam
breks idukki dam can,t withstand leading to huge disaster.
Presently mulaperiyar dam contain 11.75 T.M.C water .Idukki has a capacity to retain 74 T.M.C water ,dam presently has almost 65 T.MC water.Logically not possible to store powerful water rush at 18000 joules power (10 times stonger than atom bomb bursted at Hiroshima )

The old dam can be preserved by constructing reinforced concrete structures on both sides and make it strong and new.The reinforced concrete structures will serve as buffer walls which will also help Kerala to raise the water level to 142 degrees as fixed by the Supreme Court While inaugurating the Bhakra–Nangal Project to the Nation, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said, "This dam has been built with the unrelenting toil of man for the benefit of mankind and therefore is worthy of worship. May you call it a Temple or a Gurdwara or a Mosque, it inspires our admiration and reverence".Demolishing a dam is like demolishing a temple. Supreme Court and the people of Tamil Nadu will not allow it. The old dam can be made modern and strong by using advanced engineering technology. This will satisfy Kerala's motto: WATER FOR TAMILNADU AND SAFETY FOR KERALA.

Mr.P.Radhakrishnan ,thanks for reading.
1. I WANT TO DRAW UR ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT REINFORCEMENT WORK DONE BY TAMIL NADU FROM 1979 HAD BEEN IN VEIN BECAUSE THE CEMENT DID'NT ADHERED TO THE SURKI MIXTURE (MATERIAL USED FOR DAM'S CONSTRUCTION).AGAIN THE SAME OLD TECHNIQUE WON'T WORK .REINFORCING USING CONCRETE WOULD ONLY ADD MORE LOAD. THEREFORE ADDING MORE LOAD WOULD WEAKEN IT.
2. DAM WHICH WAS SET UP FOR 50 YEAR'S HAD SURVIVED 116 YEAR'S & U SAY IT WOULD SURVIVE ITS NOT LOGICAL
3. HAVE U EVER THOUGHT WHWT HAPPEN IF IT BREAKS ? AROUND 35 LAKH PEOPLE IN 4 DISTRICT OF KERALA WILL LOSE THEIR LIFE.SO MY PLEA IS THAT LEAVE EGO & ALLOW CONSTRUCTION OF NEW DAM
4. ONE THING TAMIL NADU GOVT MUST THING IF BREAKS HOW WOULD THEY GET WATER ? SO ONLY A NEW ONE IS SOLUTION
5. GOD'S ARE MEANT TO SAVE PEOPLE NOT DESTROY THEM.SO EVEN IF NEHRU HAS SAID SO ,A TEMPLE THAT AROUSES A THREAT MUST BE RECONSTRUCTED FOR PEOPLE SAKE THAT'S WHAT GOD & TEMPLES ARE MEANT FOR
6. FOR A STRONG BUILDING STRONG BASEMENT IS NECESSARY .ONLY BY RENEWING BUILDING ,BASEMENT CAN'T BE STRENGTHENED.
SO ONLY ANEW DAM IS A SOLUTION OTHERWISE IT WOULD CAUSE THREAT IN FUTURE.
SO TO FULFILL THE MOTTO DAM MUST BE THERE . SO LEAVE EGO & JOIN HANDS FOR NEW DAM
